Energy & The Power Grid Join us for a day-long virtual workshop to explore the science of energy and the power grid!

During this virtual workshop, educators will learn the foundations of energy including basic electric concepts, electricity generation and storage, and the how the power grid works. We will also introduce activities for the classroom that engage students in dynamic, hands-on energy-based learning.

This workshop has self guided and in-person components.

Before or After Workshop

Power Grid 101 Webinar - (1 Hour) This Informative presentation introduces the history of the power grid and the role of different forms of power in producing energy, as well as the consequences for the future of energy generation in the U.S.

Using a Kilowatt Meter - (.5 - 1 Hour) Learn how to read your power bill and how to use a Kilowatt meter to measure electrical use in your classroom and in other student driven projects.

Exploring Power Grid Simulations (.5 - 1 - Hour) Learn about and explore a variety of web-based simulations around the power grid and how to use them in your classroom. These can be used to augment your hands on micro grid projects that you will learn about in class.

In - Person - Building a Micro Grid in your Classroom (2 Hours) Using simple components, you will construct a simple tabletop micro power grid. This model will demonstrate the major parts of the power grid and explore how it works as a system. We will explore simple generators (DC & AC), construct simple power lines, control the system using switches and other methods and explore loads by making simple houses as we build a small town.

Registration for this workshop is $150 and includes a delivery of a box of materials we will explore during the workshop. You will receive a certificate of completion for 4 clock hours at the end of this training.

Some things to know:

  • This workshop and the materials used are geared towards middle school and high school teachers.
  • No prior knowledge of power grid energy is required.
  • You will need a stable internet connection and dedicated space in which to work.
  • We will ship you a box of material 4-7 days before the workshop.
  • Preservice and retired teachers are welcome!
