Our Story

Michael Arquin began the Kidwind Project when he was a 6th grade science teacher in California. Unhappy with the high price and poor quality of commercial products available for teaching wind energy science, he set out to develop his own.

Michael developed the KidWind idea through a fellowship at the Wright Center for Science Education during the 2003-2004 academic year. The original KidWind website was launched in January 2004 with free lessons plans and other wind energy science ideas for the classroom.

In the fall of 2004, Michael invested an initial $1,000 in developing and selling wind energy kits online. KidWind's first headquarters was the basement of Michael's home in Arlington, Massachusetts. KidWind now has an office and a warehouse, selling thousands of kits annually to kids, parents and teachers all over the world.

Our Philosophy

We pride ourselves on the wide range of our educational work, from helping a fifth grader troubleshoot a homemade wind turbine to working with major industry partners toward developing regional training programs that impact hundreds of teachers.

While we sell products, we were not put on this planet to pack boxes. We strongly believe in building a diverse community of teachers to improve science education through inquiry based learning. We create affordable "classroom ready" materials to make these experiences interesting and engaging for students.

Our business model is based on open source curriculum development. All of our print materials are freely downloadable from our website. We also believe that our clear, comprehensive, and precise documentation and customer support differentiate us from other vendors.

Michael Arquin, director of the KidWind Project, founded KidWind in his basement 6 years ago and it took off from there. Mike teaches workshops, invents products, and is the creative mind behind KidWind projects. When not working at KidWind, Mike enjoys spending time with his two boys and his wife.

Anne began working in the Purchasing and Receiving department of KidWind in the fall of 2009. Anne lives in St. Paul with her husband, three children, and two dogs. In her spare time Anne enjoys playing tennis, hiking, reading, and biking.

Nicole was born and raised in St. Paul, MN. She has enjoyed moving all around the country and now makes her home back in St. Paul with her husband and two children. Nicole has an awesome recipe for pumpkin souflee.

Brian is from St. Paul, MN. He is in his second and graduating year at St.Paul College where he is studying Auto Mechanics. Upon graduation he'd like to work for Mercedes-Benz, and perhaps one day help design a car that is environmentally friendly. Brian also likes hats.

Cindi Schwab has been working with the Kidwind Project since December 2008. She works in the warehouse as a packer, shipper, and all around "Girl Friday." Cindi and her husband Greg are the parents of three active children and enjoy skiing, biking and golfing as a family.

Al was born in Grand Forks, ND, but has lived in Minnesota since he was two years old. Elementary special education teacher, toy and game developer, mechanical engineer, inventor, and energy efficiency coordinator are just a few of the jobs Al has had that form a unique and robust skill set that make him a great addition to the KidWind staff. When he's not at KidWind testing or experimenting with products, Al enjoys canoeing, playing tennis, cross country skiing, and volunteer tutoring.

Kris is one of the KidWind Project warehouse managers and has been with KidWind since July 2008 and has a lengthy background in retail sales, merchandising purchasing, and management. When not working at KidWind, Kris enjoys spending time with her husband and raising their four children ranging in age from 10 to 20 years old.

James Grimm started as an intern at KidWind, and now has taken on many other duties to keep the KidWind engine running. He has a background in mechanical engineering from the University of Minnesota and Washington University in St. Louis, and really enjoys participating in the process of developing new products for KidWind. His wife, Holly, is an elementary school teacher, and has really helped James to understand the importance of hands-on learning experiences at an early age. Renewable energy education has become a passion of his, along with playing the ukulele, gardening, cooking, and cycling. He hopes to someday retire with a lifestyle that is 100% sustainable.

Andrew Grabow is an Electrical Engineering student at the University of Minnesota. He is currently part-time staff at KidWind, researching wind energy science and technology, and helping with product development. In his free time, Andrew plays in a Latin band and works on his own electrical projects.

Rob started at KidWind as a temporary kit packer and shipper in September 2007. He now manages the KidWind website. In addition to picking strawberries with his grandma, Rob enjoys playing in an African Music Ensemble at Macalester College. Rob is from Princeton, New Jersey.

Asa is the print designer for KidWind and makes us look pretty. Originally from Upstate NY (Lansing!), he came to the Twin Cities to attend Macalester College. A committed vermiculturist, a volunteer radio journalist and a dilettante economist, he'll gladly share his recipe for popovers, which are so cool.

Chad graduated from the University of Minnesota in 2007 with a self-designed degree in Business Communications and Sociology. Chad has traveled abroad to study along the Pacific Rim in Japan and Guam. In addition, Chad is also a former medical service member from the Mankato, MN National Guard. Chad leads the operations at KidWind Project, designs cost protocols, organizes event logistics, colaborates on marketing campaigns, oversees inventory management system, and manages relations with our buyers and suppliers. When he's not at KidWind, Chad enjoys spending time staying healthy, worldwide adventures, mountain biking, networking, and living a local lifestyle that supports friends, neighbors, and co-workers.

Joe specializes in teacher training, outreach, and curriculum development. Joe has been working with KidWind since 2006, when he started as an intern. He has also spent time researching aesthetic impacts and community concerns of wind energy as a research assistant at Macalester College, where he earned a degree in Environmental Studies. Aside from renewable energy, Joe is also passionate about bicycling year-round and playing drums in several Minneapolis-based bands.

Amy specialized in print while earning her Bachelors of Science in Design Technology from Bemidji State University in northern Minnesota. Amy started at KidWind as the web assistant intern in September 2009 and is very happy to now work as a full-time web developer and curriculum illustrator. Amy spends time outside of KidWind jogging, visiting Minneapolis art galleries, eating hummus, and listening to lectures from The Teaching Company.
