Our turbines are for educational use. They will not power your home, your room, or even charge a battery. Although they do produce electricity, they are designed for experiments using small electrical devices like LED bulbs and mini water pumps.

Many teachers and students want to know which turbine is right for their project or program. You can always give us a call if you have more questions, but we have provided some details on our turbines that may help you choose the right one.

Science Fair Projects

If you want to show off your technical skills and build a turbine from scratch, but need parts and materials to get started, we recommend the KidWind Science Fair Kit. You will have to build your own tower and base.

If the bulk of your science fair project involves blade design and experimentation, we recommend the Basic PVC or Geared Turbine, or the ALTurbine. The ALTurbine is great because you can change gear ratios, motors, and get great power production.

High school students might enjoy the Renewable Canada Savonius Kit. It is a do-it-yourself vertical axis turbine. It’s great for vertical axis projects or projects dealing with AC power.

Teaching a Class

Demos: For demonstrations, we recommend the Economy Geared Turbine or the
WindLab Jr. These turbines do not allow much experimentation with blade design (the WindLab Jr. doesn’t allow any), but are great for demonstrating electrical output in front of a class.

Lessons: For teachers of grades 4-12 we recommend turbines that will help students understand the different aspects of wind energy. Our Basic, Geared, and ALTurbine will help students understand the anatomy of a wind turbine, power output, and blade design. The geared turbine and ALTurbine are also useful for a gear ratio lesson. (The ALTurbine comes with different gear sets, perfect for physics with math lessons.) If you are looking to just produce and record electrical output, the Basic PVC Turbine might be enough for you. If you are looking to power small electrical devices such as LEDs, incandescent bulbs, and water pumps, you may want to look at the Geared PVC Turbine or the ALTurbine.
